Darío, an attractive security agent, is shot in the abdomen with his own weapon while in bed with his girlfriend. The damage to his brain from catastrophic blood loss appears irreversible. Everyone believes he attempted suicide. His sister Ada, the novel’s protagonist, is devastated by what has happened.
Before the shooting, Darío told his sister that on the recommendation of a mysterious Annamese woman, he had the Buddhist ideogram Om tattooed on his body. According to her, the sacred syllable was the only thing that could protect his Ki, his life energy. This woman has sensed the energy field of his mind and knows that Darío loves life intensely. She also tells him that sometimes the spirit must return to this world because it has left behind unfinished business, unresolved conflicts, or was torn from the body before its time.
Another young man, Oscar, lies in a coma in the same hospital room. At noon on Wednesday, August eleventh—the day of the last eclipse of the twentieth century—Ada, drowsy at the hospital, thinks she sees a whitish mist floating above her brother’s body: Darío has just died. But Oscar suddenly regains consciousness, and in the chaos of his amnesia, only one thing is clear to him: He needs Ada. The young woman seems to be his connection to the world, and both must keep secrets to which they will give impossible answers. Can one return from death?
